Cosmetic Shelf Life: Organise Your Opened Products

Organise cosmetics by opening date, label directions and storage conditions rather than appearance alone.

A crowded drawer makes it difficult to remember when each product was opened. Organising cosmetics is about more than appearances: it helps you follow directions, use what you own and avoid duplicate purchases.

Record the opening date

Add a small note to the packaging or keep one on your phone. Record the full name and when you started using it. Where a label gives an after-opening period or expiry date, follow the information for that specific product.

Do not apply one timetable to the entire drawer. Mascara, moisturizer and sunscreen should not be assessed simply because they were bought on the same day.

Sort products into three groups

  • In use: opened products you currently need.
  • Backups: unopened items with their labels and storage directions.
  • Needs checking: items with uncertain dates, damaged packaging or unusual changes.

Do not automatically return the third group to your routine. Check the directions or ask the manufacturer about the specific product.

Storage matters

The AAD recommends a clean, dry space at room temperature, away from direct sunlight. Also follow any specific label instructions. Close lids after use and keep the storage area clean.

Do not rely on smell alone

A product that looks normal does not tell you its usable period. Likewise, an unusual change in smell, colour or texture is not something to disguise by mixing it with another product.

Keep a short shopping list next to your inventory. When something needs replacing, add its exact name and size. This makes your next order more deliberate and avoids buying another version by mistake.

What if I cannot remember opening it?

Do not invent a date. Check the packaging and ask the manufacturer for product-specific guidance. Recording the next opening date takes only a few seconds.

Before shopping for makeup or skincare, review what you already use and choose sizes that match your habits.
