When sunscreen and foundation do not work well together, using less SPF can seem tempting. A better approach is to review the product combination and application order while maintaining proper sun protection.
Where does sunscreen go in the morning?
The American Academy of Dermatology places sunscreen after skincare and before makeup. Choose broad-spectrum protection with SPF 30 or higher and follow the amount and directions on the label.
Do not mix it with foundation in your palm to create a new formula. Apply them separately according to their directions. The SPF numbers of two products do not add together to create a higher SPF.
What if the layers pill?
A particular combination of layers may roll into small flakes. Start by trying a simpler morning routine: the skincare you need, sunscreen and then makeup. Change one element per trial so you can identify what works for you.
- Check whether a product needs time to settle before the next step.
- Avoid excessive rubbing when applying makeup.
- Check whether several products are doing the same job.
- Do not reduce sunscreen quantity simply to improve foundation’s finish.
How to compare products online
Compare texture, finish and whether the sunscreen is tinted. A tinted product can affect the appearance of your base, so consider shade as well. Packaging photographs cannot tell you exactly how the result will look on your face.
What about later in the day?
Makeup does not remove the need to reapply. Outdoors, follow the product label; the AAD generally recommends reapplication every two hours and after swimming or sweating. Combine sunscreen with shade and suitable clothing.
Is foundation with SPF enough?
Do not assume the amount used for cosmetic coverage provides the labelled protection. Plan sun protection as its own step and follow the product’s directions.
Do I need to replace all my makeup?
Not immediately. Start with a simple combination and try it on an ordinary day before relying on it for an important event.
