Vegan and Cruelty-Free Beauty: What Is the Difference?

Understand vegan and cruelty-free claims and what to verify about a product, certification and brand.

Vegan and cruelty-free often appear together on beauty packaging, but they should not be treated as interchangeable. If these criteria guide your shopping, check ingredient information and the standard behind the claim.

Which question does each term answer?

A vegan claim concerns the absence of animal-derived ingredients. Cruelty-free concerns animal testing. Certification schemes may cover both: The Vegan Society’s Vegan Trademark includes ingredient requirements and testing criteria concerning activities under the company’s control.

Check the exact product

A brand may sell different lines and formulas. Read the information for the exact name and variant you are considering. An old post about a different product is not evidence for everything in the catalogue.

  • Look for the statement on the official product page.
  • If a certification logo is shown, check the organisation and its criteria.
  • Distinguish a brand’s own statement from independent certification.
  • If information is missing, ask for clarification instead of guessing.

Is the ingredient list enough?

It is useful, but it does not explain the whole supply chain or testing policy. The origin of some ingredients may require clarification from the manufacturer. Familiar or plant-like names alone are not enough to settle the question.

Keep your comparison manageable

For two products with the same purpose, note vegan status, cruelty-free information, the source and when you checked it. Then compare texture, shade, quantity and price. This separates your criteria from a general impression of the packaging.

If replacing a favourite, keep a photo of its exact name and label. Formulas can change, so a previous purchase is a reference rather than permanent proof.

Does vegan also mean organic?

No. Organic sourcing and the absence of animal-derived ingredients are different criteria. Neither label guarantees that a formula will suit every person’s skin.
